Ammonia emissions from livestock housing, manure and urea can cause eutrophication, acidification, health problems and also lead to NO2 emissions.

Trees in carefully designed belts can absorb atmospheric ammonia downwind of poultry houses. Also, trees sited round slurry lagoons can decrease emissions here too. This aids compliance with Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC) regulations.
